Apr 2010 Changing the Face of Mobile Enterprise Computing
As companies increasingly leverage the benefits of smartphones, they must also expand their ability to manage these devices. Mobility without management puts the company at risk of running afoul of government regulations, and of facing civil liability, corporate IP theft and loss of customer trust. The management of mobile technology will allow organizations to realize its benefits while protecting themselves from the risks of mobilizing employees, processes and data.
Right now there is a tidal wave of users plunking down their own money to mobilize their communications and applications for work and for personal use. This report examines how the enterprise can manage this invasion of individual devices. What are the issues, and what steps can IT take to protect an enterprise’s data, employees and, most importantly, its customers? While mobile management adds costs and a new layer of management for IT, the idea is to empower organizations to leverage mobility and these devices, rather than being weighed down by them.
According to our March 2010 survey, the majority of companies manage the smartphones used by their employees, but there is still a significant population that does not. The report discusses the options these companies have for managing smartphones, which are in some cases running wild within organizations.
