Apr 2009 Open to Investment
A key measure of the commercial viability of any new technology, company or sector is the amount of funding that private investors are prepared to commit to it.
Open source is not a vertical market, but the vendors that make use of open source licenses do share a number of characteristics when it comes to their software development and distribution strategies — distinguishing them from their proprietary counterparts. By analyzing the level of private investment in vendors that rely on open source software, it is possible to assess the relative commercial viability of business strategies based around open source licensing tactics.
This report contains analysis of the history of venture funding in open-source-related firms between 1997 and 2008, based on The 451 Group’s database of more than 370 funding deals beginning with the investment in Cygnus Systems by Greylock Partners and August Capital. The report also contains results from a survey of investors from 54 private investment firms, assessing their sentiment toward open source and the likely impact of economic conditions on investment in these vendors.
